Most people post to their page and then hit the ‘boost’ button. And that’s it. But before you create your ad-it’s important to understand how the different ad types work so you know when to use them. It’s going to help keep your cost low and you’ll reach your goals faster.
Do you want to drive traffic to your website? Get people signed up for your free webinar? Get more likes to your page? Sell your product/program?
You want your audience to take a specific action so you want to select the ad type that optimizes for that action- likes, engagement, clicks, conversion. Let’s break it down…
Like Ad: Get more likes to your page
The main goal is to drive new people to like your Facebook page. Nothing fancy here and it’s one of the easiest ads to set up. You can use Like Ads to attract people in your target market so you can market to them later at a lower cost. Fans are usually cheaper to market to because they already know and trust you.
Here’s how I use it: When I started Social Lab Marketing I didn’t have a website yet. It was in the works, but you know how long it can take to build a website (whether you’re doing it yourself or paying someone to do it). I didn’t want to wait to build my fan base so I ran this like ad while we were working on my website.
When my website was finally ready, I had 1,700 fans I could share my blog posts with.
Promoted or Boosted Posts: Get more engagement on your posts
Promoted and Boosted Posts are both Page Engagement Ads so you’re optimizing for likes, comments and shares. The big difference between the two is that you have more control over your targeting with Promoted Posts.

Promoted/Boosted Posts are a great way to stay in front of your audience. You’ve probably noticed you only reach a small percentage of your fans when you put a new post up. Maybe 2%-3% of your fans will actually see your latest update. So if you want to make sure your fans see your latest update- go ahead and promote it.
Here’s how I use it: I always promote a post for my weekly webinar series to let everyone know about the topic for the week. It’s also a great reminder since not everyone checks their email so they might miss it in their inbox.
Clicks to Website: Get more traffic to your site
If you’re looking to get some clicks to your website this is the ad for you. Maybe you wrote a new blog post or want to send people to a specific page on your site. Creating an ad optimized for website clicks will help get the right people to your website.

Website Conversions: Send people to your website to take a specific action
This is my favorite ad type and the one I use the most. If you want to build your list, get people signed up for your webinar or sell a product on your website this is the ad you want to use. Here’s why…
Facebook is going to show your ad to the people most likely to convert. Facebook knows what we’re up to. They know what ads we click on, where we shop and what we buy. Using this information, Facebook will show your ad to the people most likely to convert. So you’re already ahead of the game.
Video Views: Get more people to watch that awesome video you made
Videos are all the rage on Facebook. They already see higher reach and engagement than other posts. You can also turn your videos into an ad to give it that extra bump to make sure even more people see your video. Videos are a great way for your audience to get to know you.
